You can use the whole app without giving us anything. There is no required sign-in, no analytics service and no advertising. Nothing Humuhumu stores is sold, shared or used to track you.
These live in the app's own storage on your phone. Deleting the app deletes them.
A copy of your study progress is stored on our server: per fish, its name and a small set of counters recording whether you have met it, how often you have been right and wrong, and when you last got it right.
Your completed Full Test scores are stored too, as a number correct out of a number of questions, with the date and how long the test took. Practice in Study is never scored and an unfinished test is never sent.
If you report wrong information on a fish page, that report is sent to us: which fish, the reason you picked, and the note you typed if you typed one. Reports are read by the person who maintains the fish information. They are never shown to other people using the app, and we ask you not to put personal information in the note.
Unless you attach an email, that copy is tied to this installation: deleting the app or losing the phone loses it.
The leaderboard is optional and you are not on it unless you add a display name. If you do, that name, your best Full Test score and the time that run took are public to other people using the app. Nothing else about you is shown: not your email, not what you have been studying, not where you are.
Pick a name that you are happy for strangers to see. You can change it or take yourself off the leaderboard at any time from the You tab, and removing it does not affect your progress.
You can optionally attach an email address so your progress can be restored on a new phone. We send a code to that address and store it against your progress. That is the only personal detail the app ever asks for, it is entirely optional, and the app works completely without it.
We use it for exactly one thing: sending you a sign-in code so you can get your progress back. No marketing, no newsletters, and it is never sold or shared. Delete it from the You tab at any time.
To keep that backup separate from other people's, the app creates a random identifier on your device the first time it runs. It is a random number. It is not your name, your email, your phone number, your device id or your Apple ID, and it is not linked to anything about you. We cannot tell who you are from it, and we do not try to.
We do not collect which fish you look at, where you are, or how you use the app.
Open the You tab. There are two options and they do different things. Start over clears what you have learned and your test scores so you can learn them again, and keeps your email and your place on the leaderboard. Delete my account removes everything: your progress, your test scores, your display name, your email, any reports you sent, and the account itself. Both are immediate and permanent. Deleting the app removes everything held on the phone.
The app does not track you across apps or websites, does not use advertising identifiers, and shares nothing with data brokers or advertisers.
Every fish, photo and description ships inside the app, which is why it works with no signal at all. The app makes one kind of network request, and only when you choose it: if you tap the link to check current fishing regulations, your phone opens the Hawaiʻi DLNR website in your browser. That is an ordinary web visit, and DLNR's own privacy policy applies to it.
The app is suitable for all ages. It collects no personal information from anybody, children included.
If a future version ever collects anything, this page will be updated before that version ships, and the change will be described plainly here rather than buried.
