Humuhumu is a reference and learning app about fish found around Hawaiʻi. It is not a legal, safety, medical or professional service, and it is not affiliated with, endorsed by or operated by the State of Hawaiʻi, the Department of Land and Natural Resources, the Division of Aquatic Resources, NOAA or any other government agency.
Where the app mentions a size limit, bag limit, closed season or area closure, that is a short plain-language summary of a rule as it appeared on a public source on the date shown next to it. It is not legal advice and not the law. Rules change, they differ between islands and areas, and a summary cannot capture every exception.
You are responsible for knowing and following the rules that apply to you, where and when you are fishing. Before you take, keep, sell or eat anything, confirm the current rules with the Hawaiʻi Division of Aquatic Resources at dlnr.hawaii.gov.
Notes about eating describe what people in Hawaiʻi commonly do with a fish. They are not food-safety or medical advice. Ciguatera and other risks vary by species, size, location and season, cannot be seen, smelled or tasted, and are not removed by cooking or freezing. Use local knowledge, and if you are in any doubt, do not eat the fish.
Identifying a fish from a photograph and a description is not certain. Look-alike species are common in Hawaiʻi, some are regulated differently from one another, and a few are hazardous to handle or to eat. Treat anything in this app as a starting point rather than a confirmation.
Local naming varies between islands, families and generations, and sources sometimes disagree. Where the app knows of a disagreement it says so. A name in this app is a record of common usage, not a ruling on correctness.
The app is provided “as is”, without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including any warranty of accuracy, completeness, merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose.
To the fullest extent permitted by law, the maker of this app is not liable for any loss, damage, injury, illness, citation, fine, penalty or other consequence arising out of or connected with your use of the app or your reliance on anything in it. This includes decisions about what to catch, keep, release, handle or eat.
Photographs come from Wikimedia Commons under open licences and are credited on each fish page with the photographer and the licence. Hawaiian names follow published dictionaries and the Division of Aquatic Resources species list; market names follow the Hawaii Seafood Council. Any error in reproducing a source is the app’s, not the source’s.
